This small town is worth the short drive. Make it an even better trip by stopping by one (or three) of the many wineries on the way. Make sure to stop at the small shops along the fishing dock. Eat one of the famous sandwiches from the Village Cheese Shanty. If you are in luck, watch the salmon jumping the damn and search for Petoskey stones at Vans Beach. Make it a full day and catch a ferry to the Manitou Islands.
